A few weeks after retiring, Johnny Maassen was itching to get himself busy again. As a longtime Arcadia resident, he knew the land behind his house had the potential to grow great produce, so he got to work. In 2004, he planted 7 acres of Highbush Blueberries with great success.

A couple of great blueberry crops later, Johnny decided to turn his hobby into a full-time business. He purchased 9 additional acres not far from his first lot and named the enterprise Maassen’s Berry Patch.

Today, Maassen’s Berry Patch sells its magnificent Jewel, Emeralds and Farthing blueberries at market thru a co-op. Johnny and his wife, Sue, also host U-Pick events on the last two weekends of blueberry season.

The Maassens are always looking forward to this time of the year, so they can meet new folks and share the joy of picking in their patch of blue heaven.
